Winning universal healthcare will require a broad and diverse movement of New Yorkers coming together to demand healthcare as a human right. How do we do build a movement that can win?
Social change happens when the people who are most impacted by injustice overcome their isolation and divisions, come together and develop grassroots campaigns to build our collective power. Building a base of leaders is a key organizing practice that includes engaging people in real dialogue and inviting them to join our collective work.
To build a broad base of support for New York Health, we are developing teams of Campaign for New York Health volunteer organizers have one-on-one conversations and collect health care stories in communities across New York (check out some of our Canvassing tools here!)
The first part of the training will review concepts important to organizing and an introduction to the powerful outreach tools the statewide Campaign for NY Health is using.
For the second half of the training, we will hit the streets to practice!
After completing this training, participants will:
- Have a basic understanding of the following concepts: base-building, organizing, and why one on one conversations and listening are critical step to movement building.
- feel comfortable using the Health Care Access Survey to have one-on-one healthcare conversations
- Be ready to lead a canvassing group using the Base Building survey tools!
In order to pass New York Health, healthcare justice activists need to engage and involve folks most impacted by the healthcare crisis in our work, folks who are likely not yet "activists." This training will go over the tools that can help us fight back, to win the right to health care -- and so much -- more by organizing in our communities. RSVP today!
Hosted by the Campaign for New York Health, Ulster People for Justice and Democracy, and Dutchess Progressive Action.
