I know that single payer in general and the New York Health Act can work, because for 24 years I had the closest thing to it, called Tricare Prime Remote. This is the coverage that the military and uniformed services have it you are not near military healthcare, and so can use any private doctors and hospitals that take Tricare (in NYC that was all of NYU and Northwell affiliated medical center networks, and many other private providers). It is pre-paid for by the federal taxes we all pay, and there are no premiums, no copays, no deductibles and the coverage is comprehensive. So when I got sick, with chronic illesses like hypertension and high cholesterol, I could get primary care and lab tests and my medicine without worrying about costs. When I thought I might be having a stroke, but it turned out to be treatable Bells Palsy, I had to worry about being sick and recoving, but the emergency room visit and CAT scan cost me nothing. When I broke my knee cap, I had to worry about the pain and recovery. But I knew I would not have to pay out of pocket for care. I had that for 24 years until retirement, so I know it can work. I want it for everybody.

In the face of the ongoing public health crisis, we must keep organizing for the healthcare we need.

A central piece of the Campaign for NY Health strategy to win healthcare for all is uplifting the voices and leadership of New Yorkers who have been hurt by the existing pay-or-die healthcare system. Please share your healthcare story, and we will followup with you about ways to be more involved in the fight for guaranteed universal healthcare.

    • Did you or a loved get COVID? What happened?
    • Has there been a time when you or a loved one needed healthcare but weren’t able to get it? Why? What happened?
    • Are you a healthcare worker who has seen patients delay care due to cost or insurance barriers?
    • Are you concerned about losing your union health benefits due to job loss or privatization?
    • Have you lost a job that provided you or your family with insurance coverage?
    • Are you struggling with the high cost of medical bills or medical debt?

Thank you for being part of the movement to win healthcare for all.
