Tell Our Elected Officials to Pass the New York Health Act!

The Coronavirus pandemic is an unprecedented public health crisis that puts all of our lives at risk. Many of us who lose our jobs will also lose our health insurance just when we may need it most. The pandemic is exposing the weaknesses of the current healthcare system and why we must create a system that guarantees care for everybody — regardless race, age, or employment status.

The New York Health Act [A6058/S5474] will provide comprehensive, universal health coverage — including long-term care — for every resident of New York. You and your healthcare providers will work to keep you healthy. New York Health pays the bill. And health insurance coverage will no longer be tied to our jobs.

Thanks to the grassroots movement across the state, the New York Health Act was reintroduced in 2021 with majority support of members in both the New York State Assembly and Senate (first time in history), and public support has never been higher for single-payer healthcare. Despite these positive indicators, the bill faces an uphill battle with well-funded corporate opposition working hard to block it. They have the money, but we have the people.

In just a few minutes, you can make a huge impact on the campaign to win guaranteed healthcare. Use this simple online tool to call, email and tweet your elected officials in the Senate and Assembly, asking them to pass the New York Health Act this year. Your elected officials need to urge the Assembly and Senate leaders to move the bill through committee and to the floor. Passing the NY Health Act has never been more urgent.

Follow the simple steps below to call, email or tweet your Assembly Member and State Senator. For the call feature, the system will call your number and automatically patch you through to your elected official's office.

I called State Senator Peter Harckham’s office in Albany. The recording said that due to the pandemic everyone was working from home. According to the menu, the staffer handling legislative matters is Sarah Perez so I chose her. I was not able to speak to her, only got voicemail. I condensed my message as best I could, urging Harckham to co-sponsor the N.Y. Health Act for some of the reasons I mentioned and because he had co-sponsored it in previous years. I left my phone number and email for Perez to reach me if she desired. I hope this was helpful. (I was afraid to leave too long a message, not knowing when I might be cut off.)

I’ve emailed and called Phil Steck,Cuomo and Tedisco and only 1 of them called me back and emailed me back personally and his name was Phil Steck! That man is great! And he supports this NY Health Act Bill 100% and from what I was told Cuomo and Tedisco are holding it up. So with that said it’s time to put a lot of pressure on them 2!

I called Amedore’s Albany office and spoke with Ryan. I asked where Amedore stands on the NY Health Act. He made a vague statement about “We’re looking at it from a budgetary standpoint” and when pressed, just said different iterations of the same thing. I asked him to convey to Senator Amedore that I support S4840.

I contacted both offices of Senator Gallivan and reminded them that this would save money for 98% of New Yorkers and relieve the Medicaid Burden from the county taxpayers. Staffers said they have been receiving quite a number of calls on this bill.

Senator Brian Benjamin is a supporter of the bill, so I emphasized that I hope he will put his full weight behind it. The aide who took my call was friendly and receptive, will “definitely convey my comments to the senator.”

The lady at Senator Bonacic’s office argued that the NYHA would still deny coverage to people and it would take away my good insurance that I have now. I told her i feel very strongly about this bill and please take down my opinion anyway!
